We staged his first play ‘Brihannala’ at the National School of Drama. We also staged ‘Mrigtrishna’, his second play. ‘Brihanalla’ was published in the prestigious theatre magazine ‘Natrang'. The next year, I had started NSD’s periodical ‘Rang Prasang’ in which Mrigtrishna was published. These plays were produced by the National School of Drama for the students and directed by me. The students were very welcoming and highly appreciated the plays and I felt very gratified having done them.

He usually adopts the purest form of the language without any additional flavour of dialects thus making it original and expressive. I had the privilege to direct one of his plays, “Mrigtrishna” in the beginning of the century in Delhi. The poetic renderings of the text helped me a lot in creating the theatrical visuals. The structures of his plays are profoundly emotional by describing Indian sentiments to their fullest.

The inspiration was a play by the name of Brihanalla, written in 1995 by Anupam Kumar, where he presented a very powerful conflict in the form of Uttara falling in love with Arjuna, and the latter rejecting her, as he believes her to be in the position of his daughter. That conflict inspired me to blend it with the story of Urvashi’s Curse, and create a new script,” (To Indian Express talking about his play The Curse of Urvashi)

Playwright Anupam Kumar has adopted this section of the epic in a light that strikes at the bottom of the idea of gender. The playwright has created the play with multiple shades, which not only condemns the idea of gender, but also deals with it in details, discussing how it is induced into one’s mind and what its consequences are. This play makes it more than evident that possibly no human fits into the categories of gender set up by the society.

The death of Mohan Rakesh created a void in Modern Indian Theatre in the field of original plays. But after a gap there was a turning point when new playwrights marked their perception of contemporary life with novel techniques and fresh viewpoints. They experimented with their creative style and in the 90s use of humour was seen in the expression of struggle against the prevailing political and social systems as in the play 'Brihannala' by playwright Anupam Kumar..."
